50 Best Plants on the Planet

by Bob G Cannon II

I like cookbooks, I always have. I can spend hours reading through one and making the various recipes in my head, no dishes to clean up that way. Of course I do end up actually cooking some of the recipes and usually those I cook for enjoy them.

50 Best Plants on the Planet by Cathy Thomas measures about 8.5 by 10.5 inches with 352 pages of information, illustrations and recipes. There is an index, the book is hardbound with a dust jacket. Copyright 2013 from Chronicle Books in San Francisco, USA ISBN: 978-1-4521-0284-9

Book Cover

Cookbooks from produce houses are usually at the low end of the spectrum, more of a 'buy our stuff' advertisement than a real cookbook. I recently got one such cookbook when Melissa's sent me their 50 Best Plants on the Planet. My first surprise is that it is a real book, printed and bound well with good color and design elements. The second surprise is that it has real recipes that you will want to make and not expanded advertising fliers. The design of this book is fairly artsy BUT not to the point that it interferes with the book's function.

So, right off Melissa's 50 Best Plants on the Planet gives the reader a good experience and quite a bit of information. After the Foreword and Introduction the material is presented as chapters about each item (Arugula to Watermelon) in alphabetical order with each chapter highlighting uses and recipes for the particular fruit or vegetable. A nice, simple layout that allows for a quick selection of recipes for what you might have on hand.

Besides more common culinary fare as green beans, peaches and squash there are headings for some things that will appeal to the more adventurous such as Tangerine, passion fruit, guava, papaya and others. The Cactus Pear Sorbet is just one simple recipe of many with varying complexity that you will want to try. Order your copy and expand your diet and tastes.
